Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure through which the surface of a joint is remodeled or replaced.
Dr. S. Arumugam and his colleagues taught an online arthroplasty course online for four weeks. It was aimed at helping students nail the basics of knee and hip replacement surgery.
They learnt the history of the surgical procedures, planning a surgery, and post-operative care for patients who have undergone total knee and hip replacement procedures.
Dr. S. Arumugam lectured students on the factors that indicate when a patient needs knee surgery. He also explained how to plan total knee replacement surgery.
Students also learnt the basic cuts used in total knee replacement surgery. This was an essential lesson as each of these cuts has a science behind it.
They can influence the Total Knee Replacement Surgery outcome as the cuts are dependent on each other.
The doctor and his colleague lectured students on the valgus and varus knee deformities in the next lectures.
In a Valgus knee deformity, the knee is bent towards the body’s midline. This type of deformity is most common in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis.
In a Varus Knee deformity, the knee is bent away from the body’s midline. This type of deformity is common among patients with osteoarthritis.
Dr. S. Arumugam also enlightened the students on FFD in radiology to get an accurate imaging test for their patients.
The workshop went on every Saturday for 90 minutes, and students learnt plenty in the arthroplasty course.
