    What is Knee Replacement Surgery?

The Knee bones have a soft tissue called cartilage. When the cartilage wears off, it causes wear and tears in the joints. This leads to pain and inflammation around the knees.

In a Knee Replacement Surgery, parts of the knee bone are shaved off and replaced with different kinds of implants depending on the severity of osteoarthritis in the knee and the patient’s age itself.

    Types of Knee replacement

    Partial knee replacement

When only the inner middle portion of the knee is worn off due to wear and tear, a partial knee replacement surgery is done. Only a portion of the knee joint is shaved off and replaced with an implant.

    Single knee replacement

If only one side of the knee is affected by arthritis, a single knee replacement surgery is done.

    Total knee replacement

If both knees are affected because of arthritis, a total knee replacement surgery is done. Here, an artificial prosthesis is fitted in both the knee joints.

    Staged knee replacement
In staged knee replacement, each knee is operated several months apart. This gives more time for recovery in each knee for elderly patients.

    Simultaneous knee replacement
In simultaneous knee replacement, both the knees are operated at the same time. Dr.S. Arumugam is an experienced doctor and therefore, this procedure can be done without a hiccup.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Should I have a total knee replacement surgery?

Total knee replacement is an elective operation. The decision to have the operation is not made by the doctor, it is made by you. The doctor may recommend the operation, but your decision must be based on the problems faced by you versus the benefit you are going to get after surgery.

What is the average time taken for joint replacement surgery?

The average time taken for the joint replacement surgery is one hour. However it takes about three hours for the patient to come out of O.T.

Who will require to undergo Total Knee Replacement Surgery?

Patients don’t need to resort to a Knee Replacement Surgery unless the pain becomes unbearable. People with extreme knee pain will need help getting up and walking even short distances. Sometimes, patients might also start showing severe deformities in the knee due to arthritis.

When this is the case, surgery is the only option. If a patient is experiencing lesser pain, they can be treated with alternate methods like vitamin tablets and injections.

Does one require walker or stick support after joint replacement surgery?

Yes, one requires external support aids for 3-6 weeks after the operation. These walking aids are discarded in due course of time once muscle control improves.

    Does Replacement Surgery hurt?

Knee Replacement Procedure has been the most successful procedure for 30 years. Patients can begin walking, squatting, and climbing up the stairs without any pain in about 2-3 months.

They can remain pain-free thereafter with regular exercise and walking.

Can people with diabetes, high blood pressure or heart trouble undergo joint replacement surgery?

A person with diabetes, hypertension or heart conditions can undergo joint replacement surgery. However, diabetes and blood pressure must be under control before surgery.
